Writing
Your child will be writing at school almost everyday. Writing at this age is still very developmental. You will see your child make many mistakes in grammar and spelling. While in the process of producing a piece, it is important to let your child get his thoughts down. It's OK if he makes mistakes. Ideas are just as important as the functional content of writing. Through the writing process, we will learn to edit our mistakes later .
In third grade, we will learn to go through all the steps: planning, writing ideas, editing/corrections, and publishing. But most importantly is the act of writing. The more your child is allowed to experience writing, the more they will feel comfortable writing.
*Please encourage your child to write his/her "stories" in their home composition notebook. Your child's daily stories are the best experiences for them to write. These stories will be the seeds that grow into many personal narrative pieces here at school.
You can also help your child by continuing to read together as often as you can. When you point out colorful language that author's use in books, your child will be more apt to transfer those wonderful words to their own writing.
Although Personal Narrative is the biggest focus for our writing, we will also learn about expository writing, how-to letters, fictional narratives, poetry and persuasive Writings.
